1961 VW Beetle and other assorted Years

May 5, 2013

This shot is from today’s Bob Baker Volkswagen Show in Carlsbad, California. This car is a 1961 but has parts from years as far back as an early 50′s split window grafted in. Owner said he has had the car since the 1970′s. Photo nerd info: Nikon D800, 80-200 Nikon Lens at 80mm, F3.2 @ 500 second, iso 50.

My personal 62 Volkswagen

April 3, 2013

Took a little cruise out today to do my errands. Had a camera, a wall, my 62 bug and some sun. This is with the new front end modifications. There are a few more details needing attention. Note the center caps on front wheels missing. The new 4.5″ BRM wheels have a slightly smaller hole for the center cap so my custom billet ones don’t fit. Those are being custom-made this week. Front end is now running Airkewld front BAD disc brakes, stainless braided lines, 3″ narrowed beam, 4.5″ BRM style wheels and new ContiEcoContact 145/65/15 tires (Smart Car tires).  Happy driving!

This weather makes me dream of…

February 8, 2013

the beach, surfboards and a VW bus. I hope this photo helps you through this Winter weather. Those of us in San Diego aren’t experiencing anything near what the North East is going through today and this weekend. In San Diego, anytime it rains and is under 50 degrees F, we almost call FEMA. Good luck to all of you in the East, stay warm and dream of buses, warm beaches and surf. Photo info: Shot at Big Wednesday, August 2012 at San Onofre Beach, California.

Two things I miss from 1983

October 3, 2012

© 1983 timm eubanks

This is a shot of two icons from my past. My new 1983 VW GTI and Riverside International Raceway.

I believe the introduction of the GTI in 83 into the U.S. was what launched Volkswagen’s rebirth here in the U.S. The car was a sleeper and I did blow away a few surprised American muscle car owners from stop lights. The car was fast, handled well, had good gas mileage, had crazy colored seat fabric and was built in America.

Riverside Raceway was a great venue for watching Nascar, Indy Car, SCCA and Off Road races. I spent many weekends there as a spectator, photographer and a few times a crew member. I have fond memories of this race track and the closing of it for “progress” was a sad day in 1989.

Photo nerd info: 1983: Camera would have been some 35mm Minolta (that is what I shot in those days) negative film, printed at local photo lab in Redondo Beach, scanned print. While shooting I was probably wearing some brightly colored polo shirt, shorts that were way to short and white, (hey, it was 1983) flip flops or Vans.

My 62 VW at Encinitas 101 Cruise

July 19, 2012

Downtown Encinitas, California has a cruise night on the third Thursday of every Summer month. So many VWs this time. This is my 1962 Ragtop (sliding sunroof) Beetle parked in the Nixon parking lot. Good time, perfect weather.

Right Hand Drive Green Beetle

June 6, 2012

Shot this cool, slammed, flat green Beetle in Surprise, AZ at the Airkewld Open House. Owner of this VW is Troy. He has done a lot of subtle and not so subtle tricks to it. RHD is cool. Military equipment on the roof rack finishes off the look perfectly. Thanks to Troy for letting me shoot his car and Pete at Airkewld.

Photo nerd info: Nikon D3x with 80-200mm Nikon lens at 80mm, F4.5 @ 1/30th second, single Calumet Travelite 375 firing wireless hand-held by Jim following the car as it cruises (Thanks Jim).

Bagged 59 Ghia @ Airkewld Open House AZ

April 20, 2012

Airkewld in Goodyear, Arizona had their open house for the new location in March of 2012. By midday the parking lot was filled with Volkswagens of various types. It was amazing to see so many VW people stopping to hang out at Airkewld. Pete Skiba is the owner of Airkewld and his products he carries and produces in-house are some of the best in the VW business. The turnout of customers for his open house made that very clear. This 59 Ghia is owned by Rodney Peralta and he brought it in from Huntington Beach, CA. It’ bagged so it sits perfectly low and the interior is beautiful. The upholstery is tan leather with Gucci cloth inserts, classic and with class! Pete:  http://airkewld.com/  Rodney’s band:  Albatross Overdrive

San Diego Beach, Surf & a VW Bus

February 8, 2012

This just puts a smile on my face. Try to be in a bad mood if this is your bus in San Diego, on the beach, 75 degrees and you are about to get into the water. Photo nerd info: Nikon D7000, Nikon 50mm shot at f 1.4 @ 1/8000, drank a Dr Pepper without High Fructose corn syrup but real sugar.
