  1. Hi Tim,
    Is the purpose of the barrel to just protect the wine from light or is it to give flavour as well? I guess over the years it would become a mixture of several vintages.

    I hadn’t seen the word patina used before ..I’ve now taken a shine to it.

  2. Hi Sean, Flavor and to store the wine. The winemaker decides how long to keep it in oak and what type of oak. They monitor the use of these barrels closely. They only use the barrels for a few years and then they are replaced. Good French oak barrels are expensive and they have a life so it that is part of what you are paying for in a good wine. I love the word patina and use it way too often!
