My day job, shooting wine. Photo nerd info: Nikon D3x with Nikon 105 2.8 Macro, f 4 @ 125th, Speedotron lighting, it was a Friday.
I shot this years ago when working for the VW and Off Road Magazines. This was shot circa 1980 at the Mint 400 Race outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the class that wasn’t the fastest on the course but that beat you to death. Class 11 is pretty much a stock Volkswagen with the only modifications being safety, reinforcement and ground clearance. I remember my friend Loren raced this class and he told stories of pushing the car through silt more than driving it. The Mint 400 was a great race. Four laps of 100 miles each through the desert. Best part was always pushing the cars through tech inspection down Fremont Street in Vegas the day before the race. Always a party! Photo Nerd info: Nikon F3 High eye point camera, probably 50mm lens, Kodak Tri X Film, I was sporting a ridiculously thin mustache.
I find that after a photo shoot of people, I usually enjoy the outtakes. This is when the person lets their guard down and just laughs, usually at one of my jokes that every dad tells to his kids. My theory is, it makes your model comfortable because you have just helped them wonder why they would be self-conscious when the photographer is making a fool of himself. This shot is an outtake from a shoot in San Francisco of real members of a Credit Union.
Son in Law and Grandson at Cabazon, California. Reminds me of an old Godzilla movie scene. Love that Grandson is wearing his Dinosaur sweat shirt. Photo Nerd Info: Nikon D7000 and 50mm 1.4 lens, ISO 100, f 1.4 @ 1/800th, hand-held, standing with feet 3 feet apart, wearing a red shirt on Christmas Day 2011, I had Cream of Wheat for breakfast.
January 3, 2012, 76 degrees and sunny. Drove my 1962 VW Beetle into the parking lot at Beacons Beach, which was quite full for a Tuesday morning. After answering the same questions about what year was my VW and listening to how many VWs they had owned from the others that were there to check out the surf, I stepped to the edge of the cliff. There had been a high surf warning alert on Radio and TV but it hadn’t arrived. Hours after I shot this photo the surf ramped up to about 8 foot. I love the ocean! Beacons, Encinitas Ca.
